Llewellyn Kruger

International Art Broker · Four decades in South African art

Llewellyn Kruger has spent more than four decades in the South African art trade. South African press reporting in 2021 described him as having worked in the art industry for approximately forty years, which places the beginning of that career in the early 1980s. The knowledge that follows from it was not acquired from catalogues: it comes from handling, buying, selling and examining South African paintings in the real market, year after year.

A distinctive part of the business has always been where the art went. Llewellyn and his associates took established South African art beyond the metropolitan galleries and presented it to collectors in smaller towns throughout the country. Independent reporting from 2014 documents Llewellyn Kruger and De Oude Kunstgalerij touring South Africa with collections of artworks and holding exhibitions in different towns. Before the Covid period, his agents were reported to be visiting roughly ten to fourteen towns a month. The relationships formed on those roads — with collectors, families and estates across South Africa — remain the backbone of the brokerage.

The work today covers sourcing and acquisition, private brokerage on behalf of both buyers and sellers, professional valuation, provenance research, authentication assessment supported by technical examination, and quiet advisory work for collectors and estates.

Beyond the surface

X-ray-supported art examination.

Deciding whether a painting is what it appears to be often requires looking past the painted surface. X-ray analysis can assist in examining an artwork's underlying structure, materials, alterations and construction as part of a broader authentication assessment — an earlier composition beneath the visible one, a repaired tear, a replaced stretcher, a passage of overpaint.

It is one component of the process, not a verdict. Technical imaging contributes evidence; the conclusion still rests on informed judgement. Where the evidence is inconclusive, we say so plainly.

Decades of experience, supported by modern technical examination.

  • Connoisseurship

Judgement formed by handling a great many paintings by the same hands, over a long period.

  • Provenance

Ownership, exhibition and sale history — where a work has been, and how it reached the market.

  • Physical examination

Support, ground, stretcher, signature, varnish and surface, examined directly.

  • Technical analysis

X-ray imaging and related methods, used where they can add information the surface does not give.

  • Comparative knowledge

The work set against documented pieces from the same period and hand.
