Biography

Sonja Meyer (born 1946) is a Pretoria-based South African painter known for her romantic impressionist style. She began painting oils as a child and turned professional in 1980 under the influence of her husband, artist Hentie Meyer. Meyer's art often portrays musicians and women, combining technical skill with emotion. She uses a broad color palette and bold brush and palette-knife strokes. Her subjects (e.g. Woman with Guitar, Gypsy) are rendered with passionate color and narrative flair. Meyer is particularly admired for her flower studies and portraits; her works are handled by major South African galleries and have seen high demand in recent years.
