Carl Büchner was a South African painter and art educator known for expressionistic figure compositions. Born in Somerset East, he studied art history at the University of Witwatersrand and fine art under Maurice van Essche at Wits Tech. Büchner taught at various institutions (including Pretoria Art Centre) and was an art inspector and gallery trustee before retiring in 1970 to paint full-time. His mature work often depicts human figures with elongated forms and textured impasto surfaces. Influenced by European modernism (echoing his mentor van Essche), Büchner's palette favored earthy tones and his brushwork lent a sculptural feel. He exhibited nationally and was awarded the South African Academy's “Artist of Fame and Promise” in 1963.
