Chris Tugwell was a South African landscape artist noted for his expressive, rural scenes. Born in Durban, he began painting under private tutelage and later moved to Johannesburg at age 20 before settling in Pretoria. With no formal art schooling, Tugwell taught himself to paint vivid oil landscapes and seascapes. His works often depict pastoral fields with grazing cattle, dramatic skies, and coastal subjects. Tugwell's canvases are recognized for their dramatic cloud formations and rich color. Over five decades he built a reputation for capturing South African countryside moods.
